HDMI glossary

110 terms from the manual and the guides, each explained in plain language: what it is, why it matters in your setup, and what the DR HDMI 8K does with it. Terms are linked automatically throughout the site — click any of them to land here.

EDID and capability data
EDID

EDID is the data block a display sends upstream to tell a source which video and audio formats it accepts.

EDID manager

An EDID manager is a device that controls which capability data an HDMI source is allowed to read.

EDID emulator

An EDID emulator presents a fixed, known EDID to a source so the source always sees the same capabilities.

AutoMix EDID

AutoMix takes the connected display's EDID and changes selected capability flags before handing it to the source.

custom EDID

A custom EDID is a stored capability table you select or upload instead of using the connected display's own EDID.

DisplayID

DisplayID is a newer capability-data standard used alongside EDID, often in 384-byte or 512-byte blocks.

DTD

A DTD is the block inside an EDID that describes one exact video timing, including the display's preferred mode.

EDID block

EDID is stored in 128-byte blocks, with extension blocks carrying the modern capabilities.

EDID slot

An EDID slot is a storage position for a capability table you can select or overwrite.

EDID sniffing

EDID sniffing means reading and storing the capability data a connected display sends.

COPY TX SINK

COPY TX SINK mode passes the connected display's own EDID upstream, unchanged.

Dolby Vision data block

The Dolby Vision data block is the section of an EDID that declares a display's DV capability.

video flags

Video flags are the individual picture capabilities you can switch on or off inside an EDID.

audio flags

Audio flags are the individual sound capabilities you can switch on or off inside an EDID.

Resolution, bandwidth and picture
DSC

DSC is a visually lossless compression scheme that lets HDMI carry formats beyond its raw bandwidth.

8K

8K is a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels, four times the pixel count of 4K.

4K

4K, or UHD, is 3840 x 2160 pixels — four times Full HD.

4K120

4K120 is 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, an HDMI 2.1 mode that requires FRL signalling.

1080p

1080p is 1920 x 1080 pixels progressive, the Full HD standard.

2K

2K usually means a horizontal resolution around 2048 pixels, though in consumer use it is often applied to 1440p.

chroma subsampling

Chroma subsampling reduces colour detail relative to brightness detail to save bandwidth.

bit depth

Bit depth is how many shades per colour channel a video signal carries, and it decides whether gradients band.

HDMI bandwidth

HDMI bandwidth is the data rate a link can carry, and it caps which video formats are possible.

refresh rate

Refresh rate is how many times per second a display draws a new image, measured in hertz.

UHD

UHD is the consumer name for 3840 x 2160, and FUHD for the 8K step above it.

DCI

DCI is the digital cinema standard, whose 4K format is 4096 x 2160 rather than 3840 x 2160.

RGB

RGB sends red, green and blue values for every pixel, with no colour information discarded.

YCbCr

YCbCr encodes video as brightness plus two colour-difference channels, which allows chroma subsampling.

pixel clock

The pixel clock is the rate at which pixels are sent, and it is what MHz figures on HDMI devices refer to.

deep colour

Deep colour is HDMI's term for bit depths above 8 bits per channel, up to 16.

xvYCC

xvYCC is an extended-gamut colour standard that predates the modern HDR colour spaces.

3D video

3D over HDMI carries two images, one per eye, in a defined frame-packing format.

interlaced video

Interlaced video sends alternate lines in each pass instead of complete frames.

PC resolutions

VESA PC resolutions are the computer display modes carried over HDMI alongside television formats.

HDMI lanes

HDMI lanes are the parallel data channels inside the cable, and their number and speed set the total bandwidth.

scrambling

Scrambling randomises the bit pattern on an HDMI link to reduce electromagnetic interference at high clock rates.

signal equalisation

Equalisation compensates for the way a cable degrades a signal, restoring the sharp edges the receiver needs.

HDMI booster

A booster or extender increases the distance an HDMI signal can travel reliably.

embedded web server

An embedded web server is a control interface a device serves to any browser on the same network.

Telnet

Telnet is a plain-text network protocol used to send commands to a device over IP.

IP control

IP control means operating a device by sending commands over the network instead of using infrared or a front panel.

HTTP control

HTTP control means sending device commands as ordinary web requests instead of over a raw socket.

DHCP

DHCP is the service that hands out IP addresses automatically when a device joins a network.

static IP

A static IP is a fixed network address configured on the device itself rather than assigned by the router.

mDNS

mDNS lets devices be reached by a local .local name instead of an IP address.

hostname

A hostname is the readable name a device answers to on a network.

RJ45

RJ45 is the standard eight-pin connector used for wired Ethernet.

MAC address

A MAC address is a permanent hardware identifier burned into a device's network interface.

IP port

An IP port is the numbered channel a network service listens on, alongside the device's address.

IP interrupts

IP interrupts make a device report state changes on its own instead of waiting to be asked.

firmware

Firmware is the software running inside a device, updatable to add features or fix behaviour.

config export

A config export writes a device's complete settings and state to a text file.

factory reset

A factory reset returns a device to its original settings, clearing everything you configured.

rotary switch

A rotary switch is a control that turns to navigate and presses to select.

HTPC mode

HTPC mode changes how a device reports itself so a PC does not rearrange its desktop when a display sleeps.

TX +5V force

TX +5V force controls whether a device reacts to the display's presence signal on the output.

USB-C power

USB-C power supplies 5V over a reversible connector, and the available current decides whether a device runs properly.
