Standard Dolby Vision is display-led: the screen receives the metadata and does the tone mapping. Low Latency Dolby Vision is player-led: the source performs the mapping and outputs a signal the display can show more or less directly. It was designed to reduce processing delay, hence the name.
Why it matters in your setup
LLDV opens a door. Because the source does the work, you can get Dolby Vision-processed content onto displays that have no native DV mode — projectors especially. That is why LLDV shows up so often in projector setups.
Two settings decide whether it looks right. Maximum luminance: 1000 nits is a sensible default for most systems. And primaries: tell the source the display wants DCI-P3 when it actually expects BT.2020 and colours come back over-saturated with a red cast on faces. The fix is to send BT.2020 instead.
What the DR HDMI 8K does with it
The DR HDMI 8K's DV section is where LLDV is set up. You choose the DV interface, the primaries, and the luminance values, then send the constructed data block to the unit so the source sees it. Several of the built-in custom EDID tables are LLDV profiles already — one for DCI-P3 and one for BT.2020 — which makes comparing the two a matter of switching tables rather than rebuilding a data block.
