In plain language
HDMI degrades over distance. Edges soften, timing drifts, and at some point the receiving end can no longer tell one bit from the next. A repeater breaks the run in two: it receives while the signal is still readable, equalises and re-clocks it, and transmits a fresh one for the rest of the journey.
Why it matters in your setup
Placed roughly in the middle of a long run, a repeater doubles the distance you can reliably cover. It often removes the need for a separate inline amplifier, and it usually behaves better than one, because it regenerates the signal rather than boosting whatever arrived, noise included.
What it cannot do is create bandwidth. If a cable cannot carry 48Gbps, a repeater in the middle does not change that — it just means each half of the cable is shorter.
What the DR HDMI 8K does with it
The DR HDMI 8K is a repeater as well as an EDID manager. It equalises both the incoming and outgoing signal, and can extend 1080p to roughly 15m in and 15m out, 10.2Gbps UHD to around 10m and 18Gbps UHD to around 5m. Because it sits in the middle anyway, you get the signal recovery for free alongside the EDID control.
